One of the first steps in creating amazing video in Adobe Premiere Pro is importing our source video, audio and other files. Here are a few different methods for importing source files to Premiere.

Importing Media When Creating Project

When we create a new project in Adobe Premiere Pro, we have an opportunity to bring media files into the new project from the beginning. After giving the project file a name and file location, we are brought to the project’s import screen.

The import screen for a new Premiere Pro project.

On the left of the screen, we can navigate to file folders on our computer and import individual files or entire folders of media. Select media files in the center section of the screen.

Four video files are selected in a folder to be imported into Premiere Pro.

When the files are selected, they will become highlighted. When you have all of your video, image, and audio files selected, press “Import” on the bottom right.

Now your new project will begin with all your selected media in the project

Drag and Drop Files into Project

One of the fastest ways to import single files or file folders into a Premiere Pro project is to drag and drop them into the project window. We do this in the Edit Workspace.

A cursor points to the word "Edit" in the premiere pro workspace.

Simply select a video, audio, image, or folder and drag them into the project window in the bottom left of the screen. Below you can see two selected files being dragged into the project window.

Import from File Menu

A third way to import media files into a Premiere Pro project is by using the file bar at the top of the workspace. This can be done anytime while working in a project.

Simply go to File and then choose “Import.”

A cursor selects import from the file menu.

Premiere Pro will then open a file browser and you can choose as many media files as you wish to import into the project.
